Bailey Woodworth, a senior pursuing a career in game design, always wanted to major in an art-related field.
“Video games really helped my mental health when I was younger,” she said. “I decided that being behind making them would be a great way to not only do what I love, but help others. Like, I really want to make games that help other people.”
Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, he was a transfer student hoping to attend college with an emphasis on game arts.
“Shawnee is ranked nationally for this program, so it was an easy choice,” she said.
Making connections within his major was Woodworth’s favorite part of his time at SSU. Outside the classroom, she remained on campus as a member of the Delight Ministries, a student instructor for the drawing course, and on campus as a student assistant at the Women’s & Gender Equity Center.
“I know everyone says that, but you can make some pretty important connections,” she said of why she encourages other students to join campus. Even if you can see it, there will be someone who can help you.”
Having started his career, Woodworth plans to move west to pursue a career at his favorite game studio. She’s excited to work on her art of game concepts. She knows this is the first step in starting her own career her path. To others starting her degree path toward her gaming career, she encourages them to find motivation.
“Make your ‘why’ list,” she said. “Writing down your reasons can really help motivate you when you’re feeling burnt out.”
SSU’s Game Design program has been ranked nationally by The Princeton Review for the 12th year in a row, and this year the program once again made the top 10, ranking ninth. The program offers his two separate but coordinated degree paths in game programming and game arts. Outside of the Games programme, the Digital Fine & Performing Arts Department allows students interested in games to explore concepts related to the needs of game studios and other means of his art and illustration.
